5 Signs Your Garage Door Springs Need to Be Replaced

Residential garage door on a home exterior

Your garage door springs are the unsung heroes of the whole system. Every time that door goes up or down, the springs are doing the real work — counterbalancing several hundred pounds of steel so your opener does not burn out in six months. Most homeowners never think about them until one snaps with a sound like a gunshot at 6 AM.

Here in Lake Havasu City, our extreme heat accelerates spring wear faster than most places in the country. Metal expands and contracts with every temperature swing, and we get more of those than just about anywhere.

1. The Door Is Heavy to Lift Manually

Disconnect your opener and try lifting the door by hand. A properly balanced door should feel almost weightless at waist height and stay put when you let go. If it feels like you are deadlifting or drops the second you release it, the springs are losing tension.

2. The Door Opens Unevenly

Most residential doors use two torsion springs — one on each side. When one weakens faster than the other, the door tilts as it travels. You will notice one side rising faster or the door looking crooked when fully open. An unbalanced door puts serious strain on your opener and cables.

3. You Hear Loud Squeaking or Grinding

A persistent squeak or grinding usually means the spring coils are binding. Lithium-based grease can help, but if the noise comes back within a week the spring is near end of life. Avoid WD-40 — it strips lubrication rather than adding it.

4. There Is a Visible Gap in the Spring

If a torsion spring snaps you will see it — there will be a 2 to 3 inch gap in the coil above your door. The door is not safe to operate at this point. A broken spring under tension is a serious hazard and not a DIY job.

5. Your Opener Is Straining or Reversing

Modern openers auto-reverse when they sense resistance. If the door reverses mid-travel or the motor sounds like it is struggling, that is often the opener compensating for a spring that is not carrying its share. People replace openers when the real culprit is a simple spring replacement.
